I highly recommend the Northern Spain Real Food Adventure because of the beauty and diversity and cultural and gastronomic experiences we enjoyed. The small group environment was excellent and our guide was a wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm in sharing information and insight of the history, geography, cuisine and culture.
Intrepid offers the best of both worlds: group activities and free time.
Intrepid offers the best of both worlds: group activities and free time.
Great food, great wine. Strong itinerary. Amazing tour guide. Can’t ask for much more.
Loved every minute of this trip. Start times each day were not onerous. It made for a relaxed day.
They are not kidding about packing light. This trip utilizes the public transport system and you will be carrying your stuff around a good amount of time. A carryon rolling suitcase should be fine if you can easily carry it up stairs. A travel backpack is ideal. Book an extra day before and after.
I was most pleasantly surprised by Intrepid overall. Having been a long time traveller with Peregrine, I was concerned about the change to Intrepid. However, the experience was fabulous, the standard of accommodation was great, the transport was great (enjoy travelling in the minibuses), the activities were great, and most importantly the leader, Cristina was excellent!
The Best of Spain was an excellent trip. Seeing the Alhambra was a highlight, and discovering the delights of cities like Granada, Seville, Ronda, and Barcelona was great fun. We were very lucky in having a wonderful tour leader named Elina who helped everyone have a great experience. Highly recommended!
This is an amazing experience. The itinerary includes many unique opportunities to walk/talk/cook with talented chefs who are passionate about Spanish food and sharing their knowledge with others. Tour leader Alex was outstanding – energetic, organised – she really brought the whole group together so it was like travelling with a group of friends. Best trip ever!!!
Overall the food and cultural experience was terrific but the hotel experience on a single supplement felt disrespectful and discriminatory
My latest trip which encompassed basically all of Spain and Portugal was simply amazing. My number one tip to other travelers who might be considering this tour is make sure your footwear is sturdy and comfortable. You will be doing quite a bit of walking (especially uphill).
It’s a great experience, the only way we will tour in future, No stress, great activities, and free time for you to explore on your own if you want.
Travel far enough, you meet yourself. David Mitchell. Northern Spain food and wine tour was simply amazing. Led by our outstanding leader Alex, our group created an appreciation and love for other cultures and the people who make Northern Spain so vibrantly unique through food, wine, history and friendship. Itinerary is well planned. Highly recommend.
I enjoyed this trip, in general. The places we visited were beautiful and the culture of Andalucia is rich and interesting. Our guide and driver were both pleasant and helpful. I liked that we had only 6 people on the tour. Although this trip was given a physical rating of 3 from 5, I think it should really be 4 from 5, as the hills are quite challenging. On Day 3, there was an intense, almost continuous uphill climb of about 4 km. I had to get off the bike a few times and walk, despite training for a couple of months before going on the tour. On Day 4, the whole group opted to ride in the van up the 5 km uphill bit. I was surprised that Cordoba was not part of the trip itinerary, as it was the capital city of Moorish Spain for hundreds of years. So I stopped there for a couple of days on the way to Seville, where the cycling trip started.
I would recommend that travelers pack only the essentials as there is a lot of walking on this trip, including at train stations where there are often no lifts.
Don’t expect top quality hotels although most of the hotels used were in good location and clean which is all you need as your hardly ever in your room…
The tastiest morsels of Northern Spain from art, food, wine & history to make you want to return for seconds…
Small group travel with like minded people. Travel light as there are lots of stairs to lift suitcases up and down. Wear solid supportive, non slip walking shoes as the cobble stones are everywhere
Wonderful intrepid tours just go on
Small group (10) and outstanding leader Giulia together with well planned itinerary made this tour a fantastic experience
A brilliant trip great group of people lead beautifully by our guide Alex. Great balance of activities the time with local chefs is a real highlight. You gain a deep understanding of the food in and region and the connection with its history. The north of Spain is beautiful and diverse. A big thank you to a brilliant group and our guide Alex. Such a special 10 days!!
Intrepid tours are great and allow a lot of freedom in activities. The leaders are positive and very knowledgeable on the destinations.
I highly recommend this tour if you are a foodie. The markets, cooking demonstrations and food tastings are exactly what anyone could hope for in a food trip to Spain. The local guides had lots of knowledge to share and our tour leader Laia was always helpful and went out of her way to get information for us. Just be careful you dont run into any local holidays which are hard to find on public websites. Youll be stuck with nothing open as we found in Oviedo so we ended up catching a 30min bus ride out to Gijon for the day.
Had a blast on my Best of Spain trip. Great group of people to travel with and our leader, Arthur was very helpful throughout. May was the perfect time to travel as the weather was beautiful. Highly recommend Gibraltar side trip in Tarifa.
Intrepid’s ‘ Best of Spain’ tour ticked all the boxes in terms of great itinerary, hotels, included tours and attractions, and excellent value for money. Our tour guide, Arthur was organised and efficient, enthusiastic and experienced, combined with a fantastic knowledge of Spain and their culture and customs.
Travel light Be prepared to socialise with a range of personalities
Best of Spain is a great introduction to Spain and especially the Andalusian region. The history and cultural experiences places like Granada, Seville, Cordoba and Ronda was amazing as were the spectacular landscapes and buildings. We found taking time to see some of the sights was far better than trying to do too much in one day.
We thoroughly enjoy the small group numbers, the ability to interact with locals and enjoying having the choice to select interesting restaurants most of which recommended by our leader.
Fantastic little tour for a charming part of the world. Our tour guide Arthur was fantastic and would whole heartedly recommend!
Thoughtfully organised ,a good mix of large and smaller cities and a great intro to Spanish way of life. Wheelie luggage was used and did not cause many difficulties.
The trip and tour leader were great, loved the orientation walks to get acquainted with a location! 2 nights in most locations was enough (book extra days in Madrid and Barcelona), and the food, culture, and sightseeing were amazing. There were laundry services offered at most of the hotels, or near to hotels, in case you’re wondering how to pack light.
Great value for money, a chance to meet other like minded tourists and share the experience.
Best of Spain was a great way to see and experience a good variety of Spanish towns as well as the cities. We loved the food experiences and local culture, Seville and Ronda were a highlight, as well as the grandeur of Madrid and the beauty of Barcelona.
Trip was excellent guide Arthur was fabulous. Day trip to Gibraltar was one of many highlights. Good trip which enables you to get a Feel for each place and allows you free time to wonder & experience the local cultures.
Intrepid has a great crew of local, informed tour leaders who are as passionate about the regions as are the travelers visiting. It’s a refreshing and fun way to explore the world.
Spain proved to be one of our favourite European destinations, far exceeding our expectations. Anyone taking this trip is certain to enjoy the food, wine , architecture, scenery and Spanish hospitality.
A great company to travel with. Enjoyed every minute
This trip lets you dig into the rich food culture of northern Spain, exploring the unique local products and traditions.
Best to read the trip notes carefully. We enjoyed getting all day bus passes and touring sites. You do NOT need to drink all the wine!!
Great trip with a diverse group of people and fantastic leader. The places visited gave us a terrific range of experiences and the trip allowed a great balance of organised activities and individual freedom.
Spain was a great travel experience. Trips with Intrepid allow a really good balance between organised activities and free time to pursue own interests.
Intrepid does it again! Another fantastic tour, my second food tour and again learnt so much about the food and culture and Spain. Alex my tour leader went above and beyond and her bubbly personality kept all of our spirits high throughout the trip. Stop thinking about it. Book it now. You wont regret it.
Review the time in any given location, the inclusions, transportation, optional tours, free time, home stays and perhaps time you at the beginning and end of the trip. Also time of year and how you can combine travel to other locations.
Best of Spain is a very fun trip with a multitude of places and events to experience. With 8 cities in 15 days to visit, there is a lot of traveling involved, but each city has something special to offer and it would be difficult to leave any of them off the itinerary.
Intrepid’s Best of Spain trip was a great way to experience a truly diverse and beautiful country. We enjoyed the cities, towns, activities, food and people. We were fortunate to have Irene as our group leader and a wonderful group of fellow travelers.
Absolutely loved the best of Spain trip, with Irene, as our tour leader. She took us to great locations and eat specialty dishes around the cities, with a highly enjoyable group of fellow travelers. She was knowledgeable and caring, always went above and beyond, to help the group members with anything they needed assistance with, questions and other things, making the trip stress free so we could enjoy Spain.
This trip was great to see the big cities and a small town in between. The travel periods were not too long (thanks to a stop on the way from Madrid to Valencia) and easy to go. There was lots of flexibility in what you do in the city once you arrive.
My husband and I are seniors and we have been traveling with Intrepid for many years now. The trips are well planned and give us the flexibility to do our own thing once we get to our destinations along the itinerary.
Real Food Adventure of Northern Spain exceeded my expectations on all levels. The trip seemed a bit fast paced at times, but having the opportunity to cover so much ground was well worth it.
This was a well paced, well organised trip around some of the main fabulous places of Spain. Good that the group had a maximum of 12, interesting to use public transport and the leader took us to some great restaurants.
Classic Spain & Portugal provides great value for what is quite an extensive coverage of these two enchanting countries. The itinerary caters for those who want to explore as much as possible or those who might want to take a more leisurely pace with their free time. Highlights such as the Alahambra Palace in Granada, Seville and its Flamenco, the golden beaches of Portugal’s argave coast or its bustling capital Lisbon will provide lasting memories. Porto’s ancient river frontage architecture and access to the terraced vineyards of Douro Valley are as intriguing as the the religious mecca that is Santiago de Compostella with its display of architectural iconograpghy, including the Cathedral, monasteries and support buildings of the former walled city. The northern loop of the tour takes in the scenic smorgasbord that is Barcelona, Pamplona, Spain’s tapas heaven in the city of Logrono and the exquisite beauty of San Sebastian’s sandy bay, outdoor restaurants and historical center.
Intrepid offers a value for money holiday experience with lots of free time to pursue your own interests.
Very enjoyable, relaxing and fun, good group of fellow travellers.
Very enjoyable, well planned, excellent experience, excellent value for money
I loved this trip, it was our first food trip with intrepid and I can highly recommend it! There is a great mix of food and culture, outdoors, picnics, walking etc!
Awsome trips that are multi destinations along with transportation and acomidations are included.
This is a really interesting & varied trip, highlighting an area of Spain that is really worth visiting.
I enjoyed travelling with Intrepid particularly the small size of the group. Travelling by bus, train, very fast train, taxi was a great way to experience local transportation. Our leader was knowledgeable and caring. He always chose the best restaurants for us to eat at. When breakfast wasn’t included he would advise us as to where to go to have a delicious meal. Thank you David and Intrepid.
I would recommend Intrepid, however it would be better if more meals were included, especially breakfasts. This would provide better value for money and the overall cost comparable to what other travel companies are offering.
Sep.12-21 Exceeded expectations highlighting each region’s distinct culture, spectacular landscapes and incredible food & wine. Highlights: lunch with Chef Sarah, market tours, pintxos tasting, the PICOs, picnics and the cooking class. Great fellow travelers and our guide Alexandra (Alex) knowledgeable, energetic, humorous, helpful, caring and lots of fun!
Intrepid is an excellent company that takes great pride in the tours they provide. From questions while you book to the guide on the tour, they have someone with you every step of the way. Would highly recommend!
If you normally travel on your own, this is the perfect group tour for you. I felt like we had the freedom each day to do whatever we wanted (explore, sleep, tour, etc) but all of those pesky logistics like getting to the train on time, finding your hotel, dealing with any issues that come up, were taken care of by our leader. Basque country really wasn’t on the top of my list, but after this trip, it’s now my favorite region in Spain. A basic knowledge of Spanish would be useful for this trip (even just to learn “Do you speak English”).
More than 10 including our Peregrine trips. We are both “Legends”
Ive never travelled with you before but my trop to Spain was the end of two trips to Morocco i did bdfore heading to Spain
This was an excellent introduction to Spain and its culture by visiting two major urban cities, a resort city and the lovely remote Cuenca.
We believe the success of the trip was due to our excellent tour leader Cristina
This food tour was an experience of a lifetime. A wonderful way to learn about a country’s history and culture all through the lenses of food and beverage. A dream!
This tour provides a wide range of food experiences, from restaurants and cafes to markets and picnics, and most memorably a chef-prepared lunch in Barcelona and a hand-on cooking course in San Sebastian. It exceeded my expectations!
This trip was absolutely incredible! The travel locations were unique and beautiful. The accommodations exceeded my expectations. Perhaps most importantly, the food was out of this world! I would take this trip again in a heart beat.
Traevlling with Intrepid takes the guess work out of your travels for you. You know when you leave home that all accommodation for your trip is organised as is getting from each place to the next. Local transport is often used and local interaction is encouraged. If you have any problems along the way, the Intrepid leader has always sorted out the problem.
This is an excellent trip that gives a good coverage of the variety of cities, towns & landscape that Spain has to offer.
A great Tour but be prepared to travel light
This trip exceeded my expectations in terms of the places visited and it provided an excellent introduction to some of the highlights of Spain. There was good balance between organised activities and free time to explore more thoroughly. Overall it was very well organised and travelling times chosen to fit with the weather conditions.
Interesting culture and very good Food in Northern Spain. Tips: Watch your valuables very carfeully when taking public Transport in Spain, especially Barcelona and Madrid. Do not take the Metro when you are on your own and have all your luggage with you, you are the perfect victim for pick-pockets, even though it may be more expensive, in these circumstances: take a cab If possible: do not take a big suitcase, travel light, if possible, take a backpack. The less items you have to carry, the more mobile you are.
Spain is a fabulous destination, with a rich colourful history and a fantastic “foodie” culture. It was a bit surprising that very little English was spoken and the difference in the Spanish dialects as you travel through the various areas. It was a tremendous help to have an Intrepid local Leader to explain everything as we travelled around. Without him we would no doubt have missed out on many fantastic experiences. Well worth thinking about some basic language skills and also some serious consideration to pack light!
For the big city and small- it’s a great taste and great start. Our leader was amazing.
If you’re looking for an authentic experience but don’t have time to do endless research on places to see and things to do, and want to give tours in coaches the arse, I would highly recommend going with Intrepid.
Travel light. Make sure your feet are capable of withstanding a lot of walking in very warm/hot temperatures. Take blister pads and suitable shoes/sandels
Amazing tour leader on a delightful food adventure!
I wish I could have Beatriz as a Tour Leader on every single trip! Her attention to detail and thoughtfulness really made this experience stand out for me. I bonded with my Spain Group family in a way that I never expected. I’ll never forget my trip with Intrepid to North Spain. Highly recommended!
A great company to look into for solo travellers who want to experience each country as a local! Would highly recommend!
The North of Spain is particularly good for foodies and wine lovers. The countryside is more beautiful than down south. Also for an extra special experience at least 3 months before – book yourself into one of the Michellin starred restaurants in San Sebastian!
Alex, our tour leader, was amazing and totally added to the whole experience. We all had a wonderful time eating our way through Northern Spain. Highly recommended!
This is a great trip to explore both Spain and Portugal. We actually preferred the towns in the regional areas (Santiago, Pamploma, Logrono and San Sebastian) more than the big cities. I would recommend having a couple of days in Madrid before the tour starts but do not stay at Gran Legazpi as it is “ordinary” accommodation and too far out if you are not familiar with the Metro. PS – Would love to go back to Lagos in Portugal it was the jewel in the crown for us and we were very fortunate to have a great group of fellow travellers with added to the enjoyment of the trip.
A comprehensive glimpse of Spain and Portugal, their scenery, culture, his snd wsy of life. Let Intrepid’s expert locsl leaders share their enthusiasm for their country with you.
This is a good trip if you just want to hang out with a group and have a tour leader take you from one place to another. There is a lot of free time where you can explore the cities, but don’t expect too much off the beaten track.
If travelling to Spain and Portugal this trip gives a great coverage of both countries with plenty of double night stopovers as you go along to see the many and numerous sights. Look out for Fatima as a tour leader as she is the best. It’s a fun trip.
Our first was in 2016 to Vietnam. Saigon to Hanoi. Our guide was one amazing Vietnamese man called Nguyen Tan Danh. He didn’t leave us alone very long and took us everywhere from big cities to little hidden away places. THere was just 8 of us so a very personal holiday. Still talk about that trip and our guide. HE is our FB friend
Intrepid gave us peace of mind with an awesome guide, hotels and transportation. As a mother and daughter team we felt safe knowing our group was there but also felt we were able to do our own thing if we wanted. We also loved traveling like the locals – using local transport rather than big busses. We also loved meeting new people and now have new friends for life!
I very much enjoyed Highlights of Spain. One of the best parts of the trip is meeting new people. If you have any reservations, ask questions ahead of time.
I would recommend doing “highlights of Spain” If you want to see a few places in Spain. We did the two main cities plus Valencia a really nice beach city and a small town Cuenca. Our guide was really friendly and organised a lot of group activities, but there were no problems if you wanted to do your own thing. Most meals weren’t included but it wasn’t hard to find cheap food.
This basic trip provides an opportunity to get a taste of Spain! Great balance between having a group to travel with and freedom to explore on your own. The food alone makes this trip worthwhile!
Definitely stay extra days in Barcelona as there is so much to do there. Wish Cuenca was dropped from itinerary and extra day in Barcelona
Travel light, always have an open mind, always respect the local culture & you will have a great trip.
See and taste the best of northern Spain on this tour. We didn’t speak a word of Spanish and we got to have experiences we never would have been able to do on our own! We highly recommend this tour. Bring a back pack with wheels or medium suitcase for ease of transport.
The 10 day real food adventure in northern Spain is a fantastic way to travel and eat your way through a beautiful and tasty part of the world. Well organised with the right balance of organised activities and time to pursue your own agendas, this trip has a perfect balance of sights and tastes for any traveller.
This was my first trip with Intrepid and I thoroughly enjoyed. Loved how it wasn’t so structured so you had time to explore with out time limits. Our guide was helpful in giving us ideas on we could do which was great.
The trip was excellent in Spain. I would highly recommend it. The cooking class was fantastic and so was the lunch cooked for us by a professional chef in her home was great. The food markets in Spain is amazing and somehow I wish I lived here because of the fresh fish, meat, cheese, and salamis, chorizo etc.
An excellent taster of Northern Spain with a wide variety of activities and places to see.
Overall wonderful experience. I have been on 15 intrepid tours and cannot do this feedback with that emphasizing how absolutely amazing Alex was as a true leader. Besides running all the logistics perfectly, her intelligence, passion, enthusiasm, and just overall willingness to be there and do what ever was asked of her, stands out as one of the best tourvleaders I have ever had with intrepid or any company. She is a star.
Recently completed the North of Spain Tour with Intrepid – a fantastic way to “taste” Northern Spain without being on a fully structured, guided tour. Tour leader was exceptional – knowledgeable & passionate about her country & encouraged us to interact with the locals. Looking forward to our next Intrepid Tour!!
Awesome trip. Great even for ‘non foodies ‘ to experience local food and learn more about it. Great itenary.
As a self confessed foodie, nothing excites me more than discovering a new taste sensation and this trip is full of them! Fabulous!
The insider knowledge provided by Intrepid and their guide makes all the difference between a stressful travelling experience and one where you can devote yourself to savouring the sights and tastes of the country that interests you.
