Reisen in Peru

Unterkunft in Peru

This trip was fantastic! It was a very fast-paced itinerary and I recommend getting to Cusco early to see the town and to acclimate to the altitude. The hike was very challenging but so beautiful and rewarding. Traveling with Intrepid was easy and really organized, our tour leader was incredibly friendly and helpful, and the trek was an unforgettable experience. We really enjoyed the people in our group and had a great time all around! I highly recommend this trip for those who want a challenge and an adventure with like-minded travelers.

Peru was a trip of a lifetime, delivering on all levels and above. Do it, you won’t regret it. We had so many opportunities to immerse ourselves in the culture with Manny, the best tour guide ever! We enjoyed our trip very much, it was challenging at times, with the altitude, you need to be reasonably fit with the amount of walking there is to do, also with some early morning starts. Our group got on great together, though coming from different parts of the world.

I would highly recommend Intrepid Travel to anyone interested in really experiencing a country/culture. There was a great mix of visiting landmarks (bucket list items) and interaction with local people. The trip far exceeded my expectations. The small tour group size provided an opportunity to get to know my travel companions which also enhanced the experience. I will definitely travel with Intrepid again!

[See other comments] Absolutely amazing trip! I felt so accomplished, and had so much fun on this trip. Although I realized that camping might not be for me haha, I wouldn’t trade this experience for anything. I definitely recommend consulting multiple packing lists (see my previous comments), and packing for a very cold nighttime.

Machu Picchu lives up to the hype, and we found the altitude to be manageable. Decide where on Machu Picchu you want to go ahead of time (Sun Gate or Inca Bridge), there’s not much free time for you to explore after the tour. If you have an extra day in Lima, check out the Larco Museum and the Barranco District. If you’re going in the southern hemisphere’s winter, be prepared for it to be very, very cold and bring lots of layers.

Classic Peru for Solo Travelers really packs a lot into 9 days. The itinerary was well thought out and reasonably paced. Our guide, Ale, was terrific. The accommodations were all quite acceptable, never fancy, but always clean and comfortable and usually quirky in a cool way. The food in Peru was superb!

This is NOT a review, but some suggestions: 1. Connecting flight to Cusco from Lima on the same day; a wasted day was spent in Lima when more time could have been spent in Cusco. 2. Itinerary did not allow much free time in Cusco before and after the Inca Trail; and 3. Intrepid T-shirt (to buy and wear) on completion of the Inca Trail in Machu Picchu?

Intrepid provided the perfect balance we were looking for on a trip we took to Peru: a combination of local culture, a hiking challenge, and an authentic experience with a cause: they are truly dedicated in support of the communities they serve and are not like some other touristic tour company. I recommend Intrepid for anyone looking for a unique local experience with a personal touch.

For this particular trip I would say it was very enjoyable and a fulfilling experience but I would also say that it was VERY difficult. Reading other reviews I would not have thought the trek to be so difficult both physically and mentally. Everyone on our trip was in very good condition and many of us had problems due to the altitude. It was a great personal challenge and I am glad I did it! I wish I would have prepared more beforehand, though. The 4/5 physical rating is serious! The reward throughout the journey is the amazing views and landscape you get to see which totally makes it worth it. Also, the friends you make in the group you’re traveling with. It was the trip of a lifetime for sure. Note: I did the Quarry Trail, not the Incan trail.

Intrepid’s itinerary is well organised and well planned. It has a good combination of pre-planned activities for the day and time to explore by yourself. I had a really good trip in Peru because of how beautiful and amazing the place is but also largely due to our leader who has incredible knowledge of the history of the place. This was my 2nd trip with Intrepid and I look forward to planning my 3rd. I am a solo traveler, 54 years old, yet with Intrepid you are never alone. Our group was very cohesive and supported each other to make sure everyone was successful and made it to the end. That’s what I love about travelling with Intrepid. Our guide Joseph was the most positive, and encouraging leader and could not have been better. I valued his help and support. Our co-guide Mel had to be the most compassionate person. She was such a comforting supporter. They had a great team. I went during the dry season and it was wet! I advise to bring a very good rain jacket and poncho even if you book in the dry season. The poncho’s you buy on the trail and not sturdy enough for the gusting winds and rain.

Majestic Peru-Intrepid provide a rich experience for learning about and seeing the local culture. We did and saw a number of amazing things. However, the itinerary was poorly planned-a lot of the time riding in buses and wasted time which could have been reduced by better planning on their part. Felt they tried to stretch out the days which could have been reduced by 2-3 days. Also we were only given a half day at Machu Pichu when we could have had a full day or at least more than a few hours. We were given a free day in Cusco the next day so it didn’t make a lot of sense. I understand that they don’t want people to linger in the park but then we were upsold-we were told we could also go the afternoon before in addition to our regular half tour day-at an additional expense to us of course-so it didn’t make a lot sense. The tour was rated a 1 for difficulty-climbing steep steps/paths to the ruins and locales in the Andes at elevations above 10,000 feet is not a 1-it was deceptive on their part. It was winter in Peru-accomodations were not adequate for the winter conditions. The overall tour was excellent if you’re interested in the overall cultural experience-if not, just go straight to Machu Pichu-stop at Arequipa on the way back-a better bargain for your time and money-and spend time in Lima. I wouldn’t recommend the Majestic Peru tour-what ever tour you choose, look closely at the itinerary to see if it is what you are expecting.

This was the trip of a lifetime. The Amazon and Machu Picchu were amazing! The local guides took this trip the next level! They were very generous with their passion and knowledge. You should train for this; even if you are doing the train options. Hitting the stairs at work will help. So does hiking on uneven territory. The altitude sickness made parts of this really challenging even for the most fit people. Take the anti-altitude sickness meds!

Peru is an incredible mix – from deserts to rainforests and the magnificent Andes – the people are wonderfully warm and welcoming – it deserves to be explored and enjoyed in a respectful way and the Intrepid Quarry Trail option made this possible. Many thanks for the experience of a lifetime.

Majestic Peru was truly amazing. If you haven’t done it yet I strongly recommend it. The bus ride might be too much for some but bring a book to read or catch a sleep at your own comfort level. Most of all, soak in the beautiful scenery laced along the way.!

I just returned from the 9 day Classic Peru trip. I’m still on a high…and not because of the altitude! It was my first group tour and it turned out to be so much more than I hoped. The Itinerary was perfect, enough time to visit historical sights and local culture, enjoy some free time, sample wonderful cuisine, experience different modes of transportation and meet new friends in our small group from other parts of the world. Our Leader Norma was amazing and made our entire trip an experience to remember. Machu Picchu was my dream trip, but there was so much more! The homestay was incredible, I won’t even forget it all. I was so worried in advance about altitude sickness, it wasn’t too bad at all. Just take it easy the first day in Cusco, walk slowly, don’t drink alcohol and stay hydrated, drink the coca tea and relax. I can’t wait to book my next trip with Intrepid.

Actually more feedback for you. Up to you if you want to add it. Whilst we are touring, we are also on holiday and I think that all of the group leaders and local guides need to remember this. Not everything needs to be educational… sometimes we need to have a bit of fun, a laugh can help to relieve tension and tiredness and is not an indicator that we are not interested in what is being said. The local guides also need to ensure they are setting the pace of the group by the slowest person, not the fastest. We had one particular person who would literally run everywhere and the guides set the pace by this. This meant that many of the older and less fit people where often left behind and some of us in the group ended up waiting for them to ensure the group kept together. The other issue with this, is that the guide would tell the people up front about the particular thing we were visiting, or the history of a place, and when everyone else caught up, the guide would move on, meaning many people missed what was being said. All in all the local guides were entertaining, knowledgeable and great fun. In particular Angel who took us through the Colca Canyon and Alex who took us through Lake Titicaca. Great information sharing and great senses of humour who allowed us to actually enjoy the place with much fun and joy. Another piece of feedback for all of the guides is to not assume that people can go the whole day on breakfast and dinner alone. This was a real bone of contention with several of our guides, telling us that they had decided that we would have an early dinner and therefore we would not have lunch. This is quite disrespectful of people’s needs and as an adult I feel I should have a say in when i eat. In addition to this many of the available snacks are sugary biscuits or chips and getting your hands on fresh fruit difficult, (also you can’t take fruit across border crossings so the border crossing between Peru and Bolivia was difficult) so relying on snacks alone is not acceptable. We also had people with some health issues that needed to eat regular and substantial meals and deciding that we can skip meals is not OK. Something for Intrepid to discuss with group leaders and local guides. I loved Peru. I believe that Raul had a lot to do with the way I saw his country and I am grateful for his care and support during my stay. I believe some people may have some negative comments about Raul, but they were very difficult to deal with and had some very unrealistic and negative attitudes about their experiences. I think Raul did very well to manage this particular group of people as well as he did. I personally struggled with a couple of people on this group and found them challenging, so I was very impressed with the way Raul dealt with everything that came his way. I would thoroughly recommend this tour. I have continued onto Bolivia and have another 10 days until Buenos Aires. I have also recently completed an Intrepid tour in India and Nepal in feb/mar this year and really like your itineraries, safety ethos and social responsibilities. I think all of your group leaders have been exceptional and love the smaller group sizes. I am looking forward to undertaking more trips with intrepid because of the experiences your group leaders such as Raul have held my hand through.

I recommend this trip if you’d like to see most of Peru’s major sites in 2 weeks. There are a few long travel days by private van (including 1 day by tourist bus), so take that into account whether this is the right trip for you. I loved watching the changing landscape. I did opt for the flight over the Nazca lines — well worth it. It’s a 4 seater plane, and you might need to adjust to the pilot moving the plane from side to side. Some tips: drink at least 2L water each day, bring sun screen, dress in layers. I didn’t have much of an issue with altitude, but take it easy. Drink the coca / muña tea. The food is excellent everywhere (except maybe in Aguas Calientes). Try the Tumbo Pisco Sour in Arequipa. Finally, I’d say that there are a lot of mysteries in Peru — you be the judge 🙂 Cheers, Katie

Make sure you do detailed research of your own before embarking on these trips Peru is not an easy country to explore due to the altitude of many of the more famous sites and you need to factor in how tired this will make you no matter how fit you are. Altitude sickness is not all about vomiting most people seem to be affected as was I at night sleeping in high altitude becomes a problem until you can acclimatise so be warned !
