Japan

Zehn kulinarische Highlights in Japan

1. Beliebte Spirituose

6. Unbegrenzter Genuss in Osaka

10. Soba…so lecker

Transport in Japan

Unterbringung in Japan

Gibt man in Japan Trinkgeld?

Überall findet man Hocktoiletten.

Leitungswasser kannst Du in Japan trinken.

We were lucky enough to have a great tour guide who went above and beyond to make our family trip to Japan a fun experience.

Japan Express
Milani Watson

I’ve written most of this throughout my review however one more thing would be to say that where the website says to have a hiking bag instead of suitcase couldn’t be more wrong. My family was the only ones to have packs instead of suitcases and it was awful for us as the rest of the tour were much happy with suitcases which is the complete opposite of what the website says.

The Intrepid tour I took was comparatively cheap and this was reflected in the accommodation and “extras”, of which there were none. The aim seems to have been to take you to a selection of locations (city, country and historic) for a taste of Japan, and this it did well. The tour guide did his best but you still have to make many do-it-yourself decisions, so some research before leaving is a good idea. As with all such tours your fun depends on the calibre and attitude of the others in your group, (in my case they were excellent), so we all had a good time. If you are knowledgeable about Japan then this trip is not for you – plan it yourself. If you are clueless but motivated about Japan then this trip is for you. If you are clueless and useless then you had better spend more for a tour where you are taken from site-to-site sacrificing flexibility for more detail and explanation. I am easy to please so if you are more demanding then you need to read what is offered on this tour carefully. I had a great time and much of that was thanks to my fun travel buddies and our genial guide Mitch. Happy and safe travels to you all.

Japan is such a wonderful country! The Real Food tour was an excellent way to experience the food and culture of some of the best cities. The monastery at Koya San had to be seen to be believed. Nothing spartan about it!

We enjoyed having a couple of nights in each place. Having only one night in Osaka was not enough. It was a rushed day. We couldn’t see a lot and you don’t get your bearings in such a short time. We had great eating experiences everywhere we went. The experience of fast train travel was great. We did a lot of walking (we are over 60) and it was a great way to see the sights.

This is a great overview of Japan. Tighten your shoelaces and hold on, this tour is fast paced! Be prepared to shell out about another $400 USD per person for the non-included meals and non-included activities.

If you are after a short, sharp and to the point trip in Japan – this is it. You can either join with other members of the group and hang out or can make your own adventure. Nikko is an interesting place in that it was popular in the 80s/90s and is what you make of it (hiking, waterfalls, intersting derelict buildings) and Tokyo and Kyoto are just non-negotiable in any Japan itinerary.

Japan is a great country to explore and this trip made it so easy to visit the best places and have the great combination of city and country living. Make sure you take the opportunity to enjoy all local specialties: food, sake, go where locals go, use public transport, it’s the best way of people watching and getting to see the real Japan.

What I particularly liked about this tour was that you could be supported by the leader, and stay with her to go ‘out and about’….or you could be completely solo and make your own way. Everything was very flexible. It was like travelling by yourself, but with an English speaking guide to help out when you asked for assistance.

Our food tour of Japan was very enjoyable. Having a guide was invaluable for navigating .. The small size of the group added to the camaraderie. There is a lot of walking so good walking shoes are essential. I would take 2 pairs next time. The food experience was wonderful but not suitable for vegetarians.

The Southern Japan Experience was a truly great trip. We did alot of walking (much more that 10,000 steps per day). I am glad I did this trip as I would probably not have ventured to these places on my own – I would have stuck to the traditional tourist cities. Jack, our guide did a great job with our diverse group. We stumbled on a Kabuki show and watched Udon being made fresh. We visited Naoshima (Art Island) which blew my mind – I wish I could have stayed longer! Thanks.

With the right group of people and the right tour leader, your trip will be amazing. I was lucky in both respects, and had an amazing time in Japan. Our Intrepid tour allowed us to visit many sites of Japan using the Japanese trains and buses. This was made so easy with the guidance of our tour leader. This trip was my first overseas guided tour. I am so glad we had a tour guide in Japan. Those characters they use for words are impossible to recognize, so directions and signs are truly meaningless unless you speak or write Japanese. Contrary to popular belief, English words are not everywhere and many people don’t speak it. The small 12 person tour allowed us to get around easily and get to know the people in the groups. The days are filled with sight seeing activities but our leader and the tour itself lends itself to going somewhere different from the group if that is your desire. Our leader Yuka was wonderful and a lot of fun. We stayed in local guest houses so slept on mats, took our shoes off at the door, experienced the onsens and got to try a lot of local food. It was a great trip and I will be using Intrepid again should the need arise for a structured tour. Thanks to Yuka who was our leader and made the trip so fun and memorable!!

Our leader, Miyuki, was super organised & made the trip a breeze. The trip had a great mixture of organised activities & free time. Japan is a wonderful place & this trip had the everything you could want to see in 13 days – city highlights, country stays, temples & lots of cherry blossoms. Perfect.

With Intrepid we had an easy step by step booking experience. My daughter and I had wonderful experience with Intrepid and our guide. Our tour guide Alain was very organized, knowledgable and It was very obvious that he loved Japan and was very enthusiastic about teaching us about there culture and the Japanese people there past and present day . Although this is a scheduled group tour, we never felt over scheduled and had many opportunities to venture out on our own. My daughter and i enjoyed several times on our trip by our selves. We feel Intrepid was a great guide to destinations, We are excited to book our next trip through Intrepid again.

I loved all of the destinations offered on this trip – Tokyo, Nikko and Kyoto – although I wasn’t aware of the travel time it would be to get from Nikko to Kyoto and why the trip ends in Kyoto and not back in Tokyo (everyone in the group ended up going back there anyways). Do some research before you arrive so you know what parts of each city you’d like to explore. Both Tokyo and Kyoto are massive and you don’t want to feel like you missed anything you would have loved because you weren’t aware.

Its important to include more information about the facilities in the accommodation, e.g. the Inn we stayed in had a washing machine and tumble dryer, we could have wash I would have done my washing instead a paying the hotel to wash our clothes….The size of the overnight bag needed, my friend had a small bag, not large enough for two nights.

Great idea going with intrepid as you get to do a lot more in a short time as the guide has a lot more knowledge of the area Also language problems are more easily overcome and you get to find the better places to go such as restaurants and attractions. Loved the Classic Japan tour! It was diverse, fun and a great mix of nature, culture and city. The food was all great and the trains and transport was very well organised and easy. The Tokyo-Nikko-Kyoto travel itinerary was a perfect way to experience Japan over a limited time period. You travel into the buzzing metropolis of Tokyo for a few days before travelling onto to picturesque Nikko to a much-needed wind-down, and tehn swiftly proceeding to Kyoto, a city which is both old/new and modern/traditional and i found this a perfect way to conclude the visit to Japan.

Japan is a combination of fun, crazy-busy cities and awesomely beautiful parks and countryside. Luke, our trip leader, grew up in Japan, educated in England and was a superb guide. There is a LOT of walking done on this trip. If that is a problem for you, do yourself and your fellow travelers a favor and consider another trip. Washer/dryers are available at most of the stops so pack light and you will enjoy the travel days much more.

Excellent family holiday to Japan. The trip was well designed and varied, encompassing many different places and aspects of Japanese culture. Our children (6, 10 and 12) had a great time with the group. The activities were such that they managed to walk over 70 miles without really realising. Highlights included the meal on a boat in Tokyo bay, the stunning island of Miyajima and the bamboo grove at Tenryu-ji Temple. The Ryokan in Hakone was fun and really comfortable too. Great memories. Will certainly travel with Intrepid again.

Japan is a peaceful, paradise. If you wish to active then consider the Cycle Japan trip. You visit the main cities (Osaka, Kyoto and Tokyo) however it is the other places that you visit that are extraordinary, such as the Noto Peninsula. The Bikes allow one to explore at a good pace. The riding itself is 30 – 70 ks per day, on well marked trails and roads. Drivers in Japan are extremely respectful toward bike riders. In the cities one can cover territory quickly on a bike and earn a good appetite for the delicious food of Japan. The Ryokans (accommodation), are good fun and the Onsens (shared bathrooms) are a great experience. I have never been cleaner, than in a Japanese Onsen. Great trip !!

Japan is a ———- Japan is an extraordinary destination and a great way to experience it is from the saddle of a bike. The traffic is exceptionally respectful toward bikes; plus your ability to cover ground quickly is a huge advantage. We saw more of Kyoto in one day, than most people would see in 3 days; plus we felt like we earned the right to be there, rather than jumping off a tour bus. Classic Japan is a great trip to choose if you want to experience some of the variety Japan has to offer, from the very bustling populated city of Tokyo to the beautiful traditional ancient village of Tsumago, from the historic and emotionally charged Hiroshima to the not so touristy Matsumoto, the gateway to the Japanese Alps. Great centrally located hotels and a traditional ryokan. Travel is mostly by train, including Shinkansen and involves quite a bit of walking. Beautiful cherry blossoms and gardens in Kyoto and Himeji Castle framed in cherry blossoms a sight to behold. Our guide Miho was excellent in all respects, very attentive, helpful and informative. Definitely would like to return to Japan and see more.

Our Japanese trip experience, though strenuous for some, must be highlighted even more on the website to let others know of how physically demanding the trip would be. Taking public transport while lugging luggage, walking and being on your feet for hours on end requires some degree of fitness. Probably OK for the younger generation.

Japan Express
Tim Burrows

The Japan Express is a good name for it. The trip moves fast – not as fast as the shinkansen ride you will take, but fast. You will probably have a full and lively experience checking out urban (and some rural), contemporary Japan. In Tokyo, there will be crowds and energy and great food (and surprising little islands of serenity.) Nikko will open your eyes to the fact that Japan is a mountainous land with much natural beauty. The rivers, waterfalls, and mountains will show you why the Japanese continue to worship nature. Kyoto may not grab you at first, but after a few delicious meals, a couple of unforgettable temples and shrines, and a look at some of the natural beauty that surrounds the city, you will probably become a fan.

We experienced the best Sakura (cherry-blossom) season of a life-time; the season is a very special time to celebrate for the Japanese and visitors and they go all out with themed sweets, street decorations and festivals. The food is very authentic and so don’t expect the ‘asian-fusion’ version of Japanese we get in upmarket NZ restaurants; expect several small dishes that combine to make up a meal (they have many uses for soya-beans, red beans, rice, tofu). The use of trains is extensive (pack light) but it all works so well and yes they leave on time. Having a leader makes it so much easier as although there is English in most places / signs and maps of train / subway routes, the majority of signs and menu’s are in Japanese and you won’t find the hidden gems alone. We jokingly renamed this tour the “Real Food and Train, train and train Adventure”. We put on 4 days ahead in Tokyo (recommended) and a week afterwards: recommend the 14 day Rail Pass (so easy to use).

Our Intrepid Classic Japan journey was everything we hope it would be. An adventure through a unique country and a cultural experience. It provided a wonderful balance between city and country Japan and a great introduction to Japanese food. The night’s stay in a Monastery provided insight into Japanese, religion, accommodation and food as did the night’s stay in the Ryokan. The futons on the floor were surprisingly comfortable. Classic Japan was an experience we will not forget.

This intrepid tour is perfect for first time travellers who want guidance in experiencing and exploring three vast, contrasting areas of Japan. With optional activities you can pack in as much or as little as you want and get to socialise as a group over great local food

There were a few aspects that didn’t make sense eg. staying in Ueno & traveling to Shinjuku. I would have appreciated one more night in Osaka & one less in Takayama. Kanazawa & Kyoto were my favorite places. Transporting my 16kg of luggage was not at all problematic on trains & to accommodation. Overall a well run trip & I would look at traveling with Intrepid again.

This tour was perfect for people to have the choice of doing their own thing or going on group activities. Being able to buy your own food too, rather than have meals included was great. It was inexpensive to eat locally.

Amazing country, trip, and people. Perfect balance between planned activities and free time. Made even more incredible by our guide, Ayaka, who devoted every moment of the trip to ensuring we had everything we needed, and could do all we wanted to do.

This was a great taste of some of Japan’s highlights. Our guide and the great people that were on the trip all contributed to this being such a successful short and conveniently organised escape to what is a wonderful destination. Thank you Intrepid!

Loved our Food Tour of Japan. We were kept very busy so stay longer if there are other places you wish to see. Had a great time with the markets, the cooking lessons and the eating in general. Loved meeting the friendly locals.

I found my first Intrepid Tour well organized and consider the value of responsible travel essential. Leadership was particularly skilled. Since Intrepid offers such a broad range of experiences it is important to make sure that a trip is the right one for you in terms of fitness and interest.

Amazing experience. Cool group of people, great guide, well planned train travel – awesome country. Tips – go a day early & get acquainted with Tokyo, research & decide if there are any ‘must sees’ that are not part of the trip & pack & then pack again with half the gear!

Take cash with you as Japan doesnt take card in many places. Be prepared to dress for all kinds of weather as it varies place to place quite significantly.

Travel light, expect the unexpected, be impressed at the great quality of the food, enjoy the politeness and good manners of the Japanese. Don’t worry about the seeming chaos of the rail system, there is always someone who speaks English to help you. Be prepared to be surprised.

Great trip that offers a very good overview of Tokyo and Kyoto with some fun downtime in Hakone. My seven year old son loved it although at times found the pace and crowds overwhelming. We managed that with a bit of down time, cool drinks and Mario GoKarting. I loved the trip. Japan offers so much for young and old. Tokyo is a super busy place but it works so well! There is a comforting order to the chaos and a level of cleanliness and hygene that fills a traveling mother’s heart with joy. There is plenty of fun to be had and we found everybody we encountered to be friendly and helpful. And of course there are no guarantees in life – but it feels really safe. I highly recommend the Japan Family Holiday.

The Classic Japan trip was simply amazing. Great food, accommodations, beautiful cities, and some of the best sights to explore, this trip has it all. I really liked starting in Kyota and visiting several cities before concluding in Tokyo. Everything was well planned out which made the trip well worth the money.

Good trip if you have the right guide, which we were lucky to have. Japan can be challenging for first time visitors! The culture difference can be quite a shock even if you are well travelled. Take plenty of yen as many restaurants etc don’t take cards. It appears to be a cash focussed society, this was especially true in Tokyo.

Although we have been to Japan in winter, to see the country in the autumn was very special indeed. We really enjoyed this trip. It was physically challenging but the places we saw and the people we met were all wonderful. Remember to get fit before you go – you will enjoy it more!

This is a great trip for sampling a wide variety of Japanese food. Using public transportation in several big cities, we got to experience more Japanese urban life than tours that haul participants around in buses.

Fantastic itinerary for getting to know Japan with outstanding sight seeing highlights! A busy trip which is how we like it — well orchestrated moving about the country. Outstanding tour leader who was flawless in her execution to every detail of the program. Highly recommended without reservations!!

If an 80 year old can enjoy every moment of the Japan itinerary then any able bodied person should get equal enjoyment. Would have loved another few days in the company of Intrepid’s team leaders. The absolute way to enjoy Japan

Iam not sure I understand it correct. But here it comes. The good thing about intrepidtrips is that you are in a group but there also possible to be independed now and then.

A great way to immerse yourself briefly in Japanese life. Cycling is an ideal transport medium for those who are fit as it slow enough to get a good feel for the villages and the people but fast enough to cover a good cross section of the country.

Our group of 7 plus two guides included 2 couples mid to late 60s, 3 singles – 1 mid thirties, 1 early 50s and 1 mid 60s. We jeld within a couple of hours of meeting each other and by the end of the trip had become good friends. The tour was certainly intrepid however we all managed it without too much difficulty. In fact we all were able to cycle up every hill without having to dismount our bikes. Cycling like this is the perfect way to see Japan. Plenty of rest and restroom stops. Easy to just stop and look at the sites. We observed quite a number of various wildlife, fish jumping, cranes, egrets, swans, kites, eagles, hawks, tortoises, insects and spiders.

Nice trip, if you are independant and curious. Please read the trip description: If it is written that you will have to walk through stairs, then you will have to. Do not book if you can’t walk… (seems logic but regarding some people in our group I came during my trip to understand why some companies set a limit of age in their trips, which is sad).

Cycling in Japan was a fantastic way to see this amazing country. The trip provided a good balance of seeing the hustle and bustle of the city life and spending time along the quiet Noto Peninsular. The food was great and Tatsuro and Kazu took us to some small local restaurants to sample real Japanese food.

The Japanese Cycling experience is such a contrast to other Asian Cycling trips I have done. Yes, India and South East Asia are less expensive however, the contrast, culture, and the total experience, I believe, is great value for money.

Cycling was the perfect way to be immersed into the culture of Japan that has so many fascinating aspects to it. We learnt so much more by doing a guided tour rather than a self guided tour.

Spend extra time in Tokyo seeing the major suburbs as the time allocated on the tour is not enough. Bring extra cash in Japan as things are expensive. Try not to expect too much from the itinerary description as you might be disappointed: just take it as it comes. And remember that nothing really opens in the mornings so make the most of each night.
