Bulgaria is a wonderful country. The people are very welcoming. Visit before everybody finds out about Bulgaria.
This trip was a surprise, I was expecting a dark journey through the ex-soviet block but found beauty in the gorgeous cities and towns such as Bucharest, Plovdiv and Sofia. The incredible welcomes and food in the home stays was delightful.
The Intrepid way of travel is the perfect way to travel for some, but not all, people; local transport, mid range accommodation, someone else does all the organising, off the beaten track, some physical effort required
If you are looking for a trip with a great balance of support and independence with authentic links to culture and community intrepid is the way to go. Its a nice balance of group travel with the reedom to independently cater a trip to suit your needs.
Fascinating to see as Bulgaria emerges from Communism (yes it’s 30 yrs but still progressing). Some very long days with walking tours at the end so many were tired. Tweek that itinerary please. Sofia hasn’t much to offer, lucky we only extended one day.
Elderly travelers should consider bringing a walking staff for stability when traversing uneven cobble stone streets or ascending/descending stairs.
This is a great trip to explore Eastern Europe, stay locally and centrally within the tour cities. I believe our guide was essential to a more enjoyable trip, and Intrepid sources out local experiences for its travelers
For me, Intrepid offers the perfect balance of small groups, value for money, and interesting itineraries with ample embedded free time to customize one’s experience based upon personal interests.
Physical rating of tour should be a 2.5, amount of walking and hills definitely requires more than passing fitness. Intrepid over stated need for 10 Kg limit on luggage and need for backpacks. Most in our group had wheeled luggage.
The Eastern European Explorer trip is fantastic value for money. Romania has amazing monasteries, a happy cemetery, old towns and cities. Bulgaria was stunning with its ancient Roman ruins and beautiful Turkish style buildings, a mountain fortress, snow capped mountains and painted monastry. Beautiful people with whom we stayed.
This itinerary was a few days longer than some others that I read, but I felt that the extra time and cost were worth it to see more than just the highlights of these countries. After taking the trip, I feel that my decision to choose Intrepid resulted in a more complete look at this area.
Loved the trip, learning about the history, exploring the old cities, places less travelled. Travel light as carrying bags up and down steps, into trains and stations. Pack sense of humour and adventure.
Romania and Bulgaria have so much history along with natural beauty. The balance of country home stays, with tasty home cooked meals, and the historical buildings in the old towns was just right. Pack light and wear very good walking shoes and you will have a marvellous time especially if you have Claudia as the guide.
Great trip. People friendly. We felt very safe in streets. Guides were excellent. Very diversified experiences.
This is a very well organised trip that shows you the highlights of the countries you travel in. I highly recommend it.
This is a fantastic trip showcasing the best of Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria. There is a great mix of destinations and pace, which keeps the trip interesting. I particularly loved the home stays and the opportunities to interact with the local people.
My experiences travelling with Intrepid have always been good. Staff and guides have always been helpful and adaptable, especially when things do not go to plan – as often happens when travelling. I find that group travel, gives me an element of safety as opposed to travelling alone. The groups have always been friendly with a variety of fellow travellers. The destinations and experiences have been fantastic and included places I would have never been to alone. I have met local people who have helped me see the world through their eyes.
Intrepid makes exotic places accessible to the traveler who wants to experience the authentic culture of a place
A great trip, interesting stopovers, nice people, good leader, and guides – excellent value for exceptional experience
This is an excellent tour showing how these countries developed, survived the Soviet era, and are now recovering. The memorial to victims of the Soviet era and the village of Viscri were the most moving and clearly presented histories of the Soviet era.
Be prepared to walk alot, make new friends, see wonderful sights and enjoy local culture.
The itinerary for the Esstern European Explorer is wonderful. Varied in experiences and great places and a deep history.
Eastern Europe has fascinated me and Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria did not disappoint with such variety of sites and activities on this trip. I loved meeting the people and loved every aspect of the culture and wonderful sites. There is so much history to learn.
If you want a small group local experience slightly off the beaten trail then look no further, Intrepid is the answer. The company is environmentally and culturally aware and traveling with them always brings a smile to my face!
I loved this trip and would highly recommend it for anyone interested in history or the charm of Eastern Europe. Vlad is an incredible guide and I’m so thankful for getting to travel with him.
The whole trip was amazing! Romania in particular was my favorite. Make sure you give yourself a few extra days at the end in Istanbul because there’s A LOT to see and do.
Intrepid provides tours which offer unique opportunities to interact with locals and experience a country’s culture, while still allowing you to independently explore each destination
